VA housing adaptation programs
Some veterans with qualifying service-connected disabilities may be eligible for housing adaptation grants. The exact benefit depends on the veteran’s eligibility and the type of modification.
HISA and medically necessary modifications
The VA Home Improvements and Structural Alterations program can support certain medically necessary home modifications. Coverage is not identical across equipment categories, so the project should be checked before installation.
Massachusetts programs
Massachusetts also operates home-modification financing programs for eligible households. These may provide another path when VA benefits do not cover the complete project.
Questions we want families to ask first
- Does the veteran receive care through the VA?
- Is the modification being recommended by a clinician or therapy team?
- Does the veteran have a VA disability rating or qualifying service-connected condition?
- Does the applicable program require approval before work starts?
- Is a ramp, stairlift or platform lift treated differently under the relevant program?
Do not assume reimbursement after installation. When funding matters, confirm the program requirements first.
